How does Cutera Coolglide laser hair removal work?
The Cutera Coolglide is a non-invasive light therapy system which has been custom designed to eliminate unwanted hair from all parts of the body. The Cutera Coolglide laser system generates pulses of intense, concentrated light through an actively cooled hand piece, which effectively disables unwanted pigmented hair follicles, thus impairing their growth.
The lasers cold hand piece is placed gently on the skin, glides along and cools the skin before pulses of light are delivered from the laser.
This concentrated energy passes through the skin to the where it gets absorbed by pigment in the hair follicle, causing damage to the hair root while protecting all surrounding tissues. The energy is "turned on" for just a fraction of a second. The surface of the skin is protected by an innovative built-in cooling system, which helps to protect the skin during your treatment.
Some of the hairs are whipped off immediately after the treatment, and the rest will fall out over the next 2-3 weeks. The roots of the hairs, which have been destroyed are later reabsorbed by the body. If you are suffering with ingrown hairs, they will be reabsorbed by the body, and your skin appearance will be greatly improved over time.
What is the difference between Cutera Coolglide and other technologies?
The older IPL systems produce a spectrum of light energy rather than laser light. Due to their short wavelength they tent to stun the hair follicle rather then kill it so there is often an unacceptable amount of hair growth, even after many treatments.
In order to understand lasers you need to understand an importance of wavelength, which is measured in nanometers.
- First generation Ruby laser: 694 nanometer (Epilaser etc.)
- Second generation Alexandrite laser; 755 nanometer (GentleLASE etc.)
- Third generation laser Diode laser; 800 - 810 nanometer (LightSheer etc.)
The lasers with shorter wavelength can produce good results in some circumstances, but their energy both scatters in the skin, and is mostly absorbed in the top few millimeters of the skin, above the actual roots. The short wavelength and low power systems may sometimes only stun rather than destroy many of the hair roots and therefore produce more temporary rather than permanent hair reduction. The lasers with shorter wavelength can be difficult or impossible to use on people with dark, tanned or black skin.
The forth generation laser Cutera Coolglide uses the longest wavelength of 1064 nanometers which can reach even the deepest roots, which can be sometimes 4 - 6 mm below the skin surface in some cases. The long 1064 nanometer wavelength makes it possible to treat people of all skin types safely and effectively.
Who is the best candidate for laser hair removal?
Anyone with light skin and dark coarse hair will experience the best results possible. People with grey, blond and red hair are not good candidates for laser hair removal.
Those with tanned and darker skin can also be safely treated as long as the hair is dark in colour. It is not recommended to have a fresh tan before the treatment.
What areas of the body can be treated?
Any area on the body with the exception of eyebrows can be treated with laser.
What are the benefits of laser hair removal compare to other methods?
Waxing is the most common method for temporary hair removal. However the main disadvantage of this method is that the client is always forced to grow the hair between the treatments. Whose who choose to control the hair growth with laser hair removal are well aware of the fact that the area to be treated has to be freshly shaved before the treatment so from the time you decide to choose laser over waxing, you never have to walk around with the hair growth between the sessions.
How does it compare to electrolysis?
With electrolysis, the technician has to insert a needle into the hair follicle and tries to reach the root. Small electric current is then sent into the follicle of the hair to disable the hair root. It is a very slow process since the technician can only work on one hair at the time. So just imagine if you wanted to get the treatment done on the entire leg how long it would take to do that. The Cutera Coolglide laser system can disable hundreds of hair follicles in less than a second.
In some cases electrolysis can be beneficial for those clients that would not respond well to the laser treatment such as people with grey, light or reddish hair.
With electrolysis it would take years and endless hours to achieve the same degree of hair reduction than can be possible with laser.
Will I be 100% hair free?
No. It is absolutely impossible for anyone to guarantee that you will be 100% hair free forever. Most clients experience between 70 - 90 % hair reduction in the amount of hair in a given area after between four to eight treatments, and the remaining hair is usually finer and lighter in colour (peach fuzz), which is acceptable for most of the clients.
Why do I need more than one treatment?
There are several stages to the hair growth. The Cutera Coolglide as well as any other laser systems can only destroy the hair roots, which are actively growing at the time of treatment. The hair shafts it the treated area will usually fall out between 1 - 3 weeks after the treatment. Hair follicles cycle through active and dormant faces all the time.
Hair follicles that are in dormant stage have no hair shaft in them and so will not be affected at this time.
The amount of hair growth between the sessions depends on what percentage of dormant follicles will become active before the next session. In most cases after the first visit clients experience an excellent result. Some people notice that there is not much reduction after the second session and then they notice a substantial further reduction after the third or more commonly fourth session.
The laser hair removal session are usually spaced 6 - 8 week apart as it takes some time for dormant hair follicles to become active with the exception of a facial hair that is usually spaced about 4 weeks apart.
After four to six sessions there may be little or no regrowth for many years. Hair that regrows after the laser treatments is usually finer and lighter in colour.
The number of treatments also depends on:

Does it hurt?
Some discomfort may be experienced during a laser treatment. You will feel "snapping" like sensation lie a rubber band. Because it is a simple light there are no open wounds or bleeding. Some areas may be more sensitive than others. Most clients find the treatment very tolerable. Your experienced technician will adjust the setting or apply more cooling to reduce any unusual discomfort. Most clients report to us that laser hair removal with Cutera Cooglide is one of the least uncomfortable procedures that they have experienced due to a very effective cooling during the treatment. For those with very low pain tolerance may be helpful to use a topical anesthetic cream EMLA, which can be purchased at any pharmacy without a prescription.
Do you have a qualified staff?
Our technicians are well trained and experiences in laser hair removal field. All of them have been trained by medical doctors and have performed thousands of procedures.
What are the risks of laser hair removal?
Some redness and swelling around the hair follicles may occur (pimple like) which typically lasts less then an hour very rarely may last for a few days. Due to long wavelength and unique design of Cutera Coolglide laser system other side effects such as blistering, pigment changes, long term irritation are very rare occurrence. We are proud to say that to this day after performing thousands of procedures we do have any reports of any serious complications.
